  1. Frommer goes on to list potential challengers to Google’s dominance, but the outcome is clear: Google will continue to dominate, just as IBM has continued to dominate mainframes and Microsoft has continued to dominate the PC. They will be a very profitable company for many years to come. That is why this is not an article about disruption. Rather, the question is if Google might be eclipsed.

  2. the harsh reality is that if the disruptor’s idea or approach is the right one but the entry into the market was premature, the learning will apply to the next entry. That’s why the opportunity for disruption is still there. It is why time to market is not always the advantage and being able to apply learning from failures (your own or another entry) can be so valuable.

  5. I decided to summarize a few points I learned so far in this job during last 8 months. This may sound like the way things work are crappy, it is not. I learned that one will see this sort of problems in all large scale companies. Most of them are not specific to Microsoft at all. Every company has its own problems. I am not saying that I am unhappy and not complaining. These are purely a few lessons I was not aware of in the college (expectations vs reality sort of article).

  7. Andaba yo felizmente leyendo HN hace unas semanas, cuando un comentario al enésimo post sobre la cultura de Valve llamó mi atención:

Do you like scenario planning? Shell “proves” it works.

Stalinist management? Apple “proves” it works.

Velvet sweatshop? Microsoft “proves” it works.

Data über alles? Google “proves” it works.

Self-directed workplace? Valve “proves” it works.

Hay tanto inútil escribiendo tantas líneas sobre “cultura” en startups tecnológicas (y servidor no es una excepción), que sonroja que nadie caiga en lo más obvio: mientras haya dinero en la caja, da igual la cultura que tengas. Casi todas triunfan.
